New Beginnings: Reaping and Sowing: Spring Equinox

An equinox occurs twice a year, when the tilt of the Earth’s axis is inclined neither away from nor towards the Sun, the center of the Sun being in the same plane as the Earth’s equator. The term equinox can also be used in a broader sense, meaning the date when such a passage happens. The name “equinox” is derived from the Latin aequus (equal) and nox (night), because around the equinox, the night and day have approximately equal length ~ http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Equinox

This is the time for play. Today is about reflecting on those dreams and wishes you noted down at Winter solstice and harvesting them. Putting them into action or reaping that which you have sown and placing more seeds and ideas down to cultivate.

Although it is not our Easter in the southern hemisphere, spring symbols still connect to new life and new beginnings therefore Eggs are one of the main symbols of this festival since they represent new life and potential. Seeds are like eggs. While eggs contain the promise of new animal life, seeds hold the potential of a new plant.

I like to blend ideas from the many traditions described to create my own ceremony or acknowledgement to honor the spring.

What can you do:
Decorate: with budding twigs, flowers, willow, sprouting bulbs, roses and lilies and violets. Any flowers in the house at this time make the surroundings more joyful!
Colours are: Red and green. Red represents blood, the blood of sacrifice and life. Green symbolizes the growth of the plants.
Burn pastel coloured candles and flower incense.
Essential oils of lemon, orange, ylang ylang and jasmine, cypress and clary sage
Goddesses and Gods such as Ostara: the goddess of fertility, Freya: love, beauty, fertility, gold, Epona: She was particularly a goddess of fertility and Rhiannon, Osiris and Saraswati.
The energy of a gemstone is heightened during certain times of the year. Crystals for spring equinox are Carnelian, Lemon Quartz and orange calcite
Focus on and celebrate food specific for spring. In Australia this would be foods like sweet corn, avocado, pineapple, strawberries, oranges, apples, beetroot, broccoli and cauliflower to name a few.

An Activity for children:
Decorating eggs This is one of my favorites ways to celebrate spring. decorate eggs with nail polish, with food coloring and vinegar, with commercial egg dyes and with natural dyes.

Spring is very powerful for new beginnings. Cleanse the old and cull as we do in spring cleaning then take a leap of faith. Knowing that the universal energy is supporting you with its momentum.

Here is another small piece I did for Ostara/Spring Equinox a few years back on my old blog http://ostarahealth.blogspot.com/2008/09/we-are-always-presented-with-signposts.html

As we move from darkness of Winter into light bringing to being spring and summer this mantra and song by Deva Premal celebrates the light and god/s who gift this and the knowledge and wisdom that comes with spring, summer and the light of the sun

Wishing you a blessed equinox and spring season abundant with the fruits you desire.
